Thoughts on the Sony A6400?

I’m wanting a compact camera with interchangeable lenses for around $1000 to take with me on hikes and for just a EDC type of camera. Anyone have one or had any experience with one?

I wouldn't pay $1000 for cripple hammer: the camera. Every sony APS-C before the a6700 is kind of shit especially for the prices. Sony intends APS-C to just be what you get before upgrading to FF (they're nearly the same size anyways) - they even use the same lenses. And since used sony FFs are the price of the newest a6700 - yeah. All it has over the older sony FFs is some video bullshit but even pros have been happy with the a7iii/a7c and an external recorder for ages.

If you really want a EDC hiking cheap ass, light ass camera, you want an olympus OM-D E-M1 series or OM system OM-5 and a small weather sealed prime (zoom lenses can never be truly weather sealed).

Im sick of my iPhone. I’ve taken too many good pics with it while hiking that could’ve been great pics if I had had a better quality camera.
Pic related was taken on my iPhone and it was put in a local banks calendar. It could’ve been a much better image I had taken it with my big clunky Canon 60D but I didn’t want to carry that thing on my 7 day backpacking trip.

Also >>4211791 is right, if for some unimaginable reason you just want Sony I see no reasons not to get used older gen body like a7rii or a6000. But most importantly look for the lenses that you want. MFT is the most edc-able, followed by Fuji. Canon EF-M series honorable mention, may it rest in peace.

$1000 can get you an A7C, no need to go APS-Cope. Body is the same size, just pick up your favourite Sony f2.5 small prime with it.

not much difference between carrying a 700g camera + lens combo vs. a 1700g one on a hike, I for example have no trouble bringing by S1 with a compact 50mm or 16-35 f/2.8
a used Sony a7iii or a7rii or maybe even a7riii plus any decent fixed lens to start with would be withing your budget, or maybe an a6x00 with a ttartisan 35mm f/2

I meant the selection of small lenses, Fuji has that WR lineup, a competent phone wide pancake, all that stuff. Sony aps-c is honestly a Sigma system.

Sony has the zeiss and tamron 35mms, the cheapo 28mm, the mini 24/40/50 set, the sigma 90mm f2.8, and some of the smallest zooms for their aperture and focal range, only outdone by canon because they make even slower lenses

Of course this lens selection especially on crop appeals more to portrait and art photographers than street snappers

They’re in the same size class as far as practicality goes. Moderately chunky cameras that only go on a strap or in a bag. But as far as fashion goes, the fuji lenses being smaller has a larger impact than it does on practicality. A lens being as long as the grip or shorter wont change handling much (a little more lens is more comfortable to use actually) but the LOOK is a huge difference, it makes the sony look less casual and more intimidating to an insecure person who doesn’t want to look like a photographer.

That’s what people usually cite when buying fuji. Fashion. Fun. Casual. Discrete. Playful. Not serious. The brand is quite popular with women.

i agree. if you need the fuji to be smaller you need to buy a smaller fuji body ie: xe4
sadly that is discontinued and a cult classic with wannabe street photographers
no ILCs are much smaller except for olympus pens

You don’t seem to understand how much protruding parts heightwise like EVF humps and big dials affect how easily you can pack a camera. A clean rectangle on its back packs nicely. I would rather have a leica and a long lens than an SLR and a short lens for packing. ILCs mean lenses can be arbitrarily long.

Honestly this is a great point, if 7 day hiking trips is the game, a6000 weighing 344g is straight up an upgrade. a5100 and canon m200 (rip ef-m, but they still got them compact dark zooms) also, if EVF not required.

I have it, bought it two years ago. Since it's my first camera, I cannot compare it with anything but I like it. The interface and all controls were easy to learn, all within one Youtube video. Image quality is alright for my personal use

As an a6400 user I can say the image quality is absolutely better than your phone however snoys apsc line of lenses is kinda gimped so you should look at third party to see if there's any that interest you. I believe the older a6xxx have more or less identical image quality so you can save some money there. Also the a6300/a6400 and up are supposedly water and dust resistant which may be a bonus for hiking. I got mine since it was a small body with every feature I was looking for, as I needed it for travel. Honestly every company makes good cameras now, so pick the one you wanna use. Don't be a gearfag

That's a nice pic anon. I would just try the cheap Sony ones that act like point and shoots with interchangeable lens. I like the look of my nex5, they're cheap and make great pictures. The menus suck. You might want a tripod I would try a rental service first, maybe get insurance, and you can maybe write off the expense if you make money. Good luck!
