Answer me honestly /p/. What is the real life, actual, discernible difference between an f/1.8 prime lens and a high end f/2.8 zoom. For example, if I trade a 50mm 1.8 prime for a 24-70mm 2.8 zoom, how much difference will I REALLY notice? Is there a site or a place I can actually compare these differences side by side? Is there anyone you trust to tell me the truth about this or is it gonna be a shill minefield? Please advise. Thank you.

More visible details like hair and iris detail in eyes, textures that look like textures instead of a different color, etc and across the whole frame. Also a better defined and consistent field of focus.

I use primes comfortable in the fact that it is against the laws of physics for phones to catch up in the IQ department

good photographers will take good photos ie: not of walls so you'll never know looking at their pics
bad photographers will take pictures of walls and charts which doesn't reflect lens performance either because a lens can be very sharp but be unable to focus on an entire flat object unless it's very far away

but generally if you have a good f2.8 zoom one end of the focal range will be very close to a prime lens and the other end of the focal range will be a little worse, and it will be as heavy and large as having 3 lenses attached at once.

the only way to know if you care is if you try. make sure you have a return policy if you're unsure.

If the photographer is great and doesn't need thin DOF then a zoom will always be the superior choice for field work.

This is possibly the single worst place to ask any sort of question like this. There's a noticeable difference but it's not insane. The question is, what type of shooting do you do and does subject isolation or context matter more to you? In general, zooms have massively increased in quality over the last few years alone, to the point where in terms of image quality there's not that much of a difference or the difference isn't worth the price. If you're just looking to be a bokeh whore then yeah primes are your best choice.

primes (specially cheap ones like that plastic fantastic) have CA wide open so you can't really shoot without stopping down a bit and get max IQ. Pro zooms are made to be shot at 2.8 with no compromises

Oops look like I just shaved 2 poounds off my camera and attained superior image quality with one simple trick.

For some ranges you'd be carrying two zooms so it would be even worse

I bought a zoom m42 bc i thought it's convenient but especially in my last roll I noticed that I just don't like the images and prefer to zoom with my legs and a 50mm. and a 28 for landscapes

I said large format. 4x5 and above. It doesn't mix with zooms because the focusing is done with the bellows.

Zooms are for wildlife only, where you cannot control the distance to subject very well.
Some might argue it would be the same for street photography, but I would argue just take good wide prime and crop it latter.
If you use zooms for anything else, you are either a hobbyist(excusable), or failure.

If you don't care then sure get a zoomy or a slow lens. Recently upgraded camera equipment and tried to get by with the 2.8 it came with. Didn't last long before I ordered a bunch of 1.4 primes again
Some zooms are fine. I did love my 70-200 2.8 but what if I just had more primes instead.....
I do all the hiking travel bullshit too so theoretically I should just have a kit lens or something to free up bag space but I can't bring myself to do it. 2-3 primes and I'm happy. People say shit about primes teaching you to frame stuff better because you have to think about it instead of just zooming and to be honest I feel like that's very true at least for myself

The difference between a 1.8 and a 2.8 lens are quite a bit. But a 50 mm is just not going to cut it for details. Need a longer zoom lens as they have a better build quality than a prime lens like a 50 mm

For years my go to lens on my Hasselblad was a 250 mm F 5.6 Sonnar lens.

I've lost track of the number of portraits, both formal and informal that I've captured with that and it has a very flattering effect that's pretty typical of lenses of that design. I won't say though it's a lightweight lens. It's quite noticeable being 10 in long, and has a bright plated Chrome matte finish on it

Good 24-70s have existed for a long time but it’s only a reasonable size compared to lenses that are way beyond it in resolution, reach, and max aperture. Most people will use one prime all day.

it's nice but id rather keep my tamron g2 which is a fraction of the price. the only sony f2.8 zoom worth keeping is the 70-200 GM2 for TC but I doubt the Tamron 70-180 G2 will be much worse now that it has IS.

I might get the Tamron 28-75 G2, is it a bad idea to configure the focus ring to become an aperture ring (and switch between aperture and focus with the press of the function button on the lens)? Did you try it? I really love aperture rings, though this one wouldn't have clicks, which should in theory sucks balls, but I never tried how it fares.

Also, does the lens "creep out" over time? It doesn't have any barrel lock mechanism. When I walk, my camera and thus lens is pointing to the ground, which makes the barrel extend on its own if there's no lock mechanism. Though the barrel of this lens doesn't extend much, I guess I could live with it.

My dude, I'm with you most of the way. I wish I had my zooms with me on holiday. 24mm 1.8, 55mm 1.8, 85 1.8.

I would have killed to have had my Tamron 70-180, and Tamron 150-500, they're just so versatile on a FF.

I bought a used copy of the 28-75 G2 about a year ago and it has zero creep for me. Even if you tug on the end of the lens, it doesn't move unless you're past ~55mm.

I'm a fan. Compact, light, easily sharp enough for my 42mp body wide open, good AF performance, nice smooth bokeh (even in difficult scenes). I can't think of any weaknesses if you're using it on a body with IBIS.

I still shoot portraits on an f/1.8 prime tho. Check out the Samyang 75mm if you're a cheap bastard like me.
