What’s with the alarming lack of USB-C on cameras?

I know very little about photography and have never posted here, so bear with me. What’s the deal with this? I was looking at getting a point and shoot for nature photography and no matter where I turned, all I see is Micro USB. Even bumping my budget up to the $600+ range and most of the cameras I saw didn’t use USB-C. And then I checked the DSLR which had a very similar situation. I have to do a custom search to find cameras with USB-C instead of Micro which is mildly absurd.

This was a very quick shop around, I am sure there are cameras with USB-C for the right price. Am I missing something? Do photographers just not care how woefully outdated Micro USB is?

Most new relevant cameras have it. Old ones obviously don't, and photography has this precious property where old shit nuggets are actually still really good.

It's already built into the camera. Interface between camera and card already has to be high speed at least to write. All it needs is to support USB 3 for high transfer rates like a good card reader, otherwise it will be bottlenecked by older interface just like a standalone USB 2 card reader would.
Cameras should also be able to charge their batteries over USB-PD and share cables with phones and laptops but that's another thing. It will certainly come, I just hope that we don't get phoney side effects like glued battery and soldered storage that go with it.

Almost all higher end FF and MF mirrorless cameras have USB-c and have been for many years. Many also charge and transfer over USB-c for tethered shooting.

That's bc almost all cameras in that price range are either prosoomer BS from a couple years ago or decent gear from 10 years ago before it was in everything.

transferring files from camera to computer via cable only makes sense if you're shooting tethered, in a studio, which youre not, or if using camera with built in storage, like the x2d 100c, which you're not going to buy. So its best to get the fastest SD standard your camera supports and using that.
Transferring files that you've shot in the field to your computer via cable is always gonna be bottlenecked by the card interface, so it doesn't benefit you at all to do it.

New cameras all get USB-C. Fortunately most cameras come out of japan and they push usb-c pretty hard there.
It's just that cameras don't get released very often, and new models don't immediately supersede the old ones.

Cameras are hilariously expensive because the economics of semiconductor production, and the central piece of a camera is a giant highly sophisticated semiconductor. They also have application specific hardware and operating systems to process the output from that fast enough and efficiently enough. And to add to that cost, most cameras involve significant amounts of hand assembly. A macbook or iphone is just a couple slabs of discrete layers. A camera is 3 dimensions of multiple layers going in every direction with connecting heatsink tape and wires snaking through - all covered in switches. DSLRs are even more complex with hardware for timing and damping the mirror and additional AF sensors and a second optical path with its own translucent display yadda yadda.

Maybe if you bumped your budget up to $900, which would start getting you X-T3s, X-T4s, A7IIIs, A7RIIIs with some dilligent deal hunting, you would start to find USB-C plugs with sorta slow speeds.
