Do what movie people do. Use a practical (i.e., an actual kerosene lamp, or candle, low wattage incandescent, whatever) and then use a motivated light+modifier out of frame that gives you the required illumination. The modifier you want to use will differ depending on the shape of light you're going for, the space available, distance to subject, etc etc. Think less about the light (though high CRI is important) and more about the type of modifier. Nets, flags, grids are all super important. This is the role of an entire department on a film set, it's not simple, it's not cheap, but there are cheaper ways to do it. Go to a craft store and buy a bolt of sheer muslin and get some a-clamps and cheap stands, start small and build up your kit of tricks over time.
