Almost all of the protogs I see at Bonneville every year trying to get pan shots of the cars on the track are shooting on Lolympus EM-whatever is good and some 400mm adapted lens or the 300/2.8 Olympus which works out to 600/2.8 and if its the high MP pixel shift body or whatever its called they can zoom in on that shit and get a decent print with it

Equivalent lenses aren't that much smaller nor are they lighter. The Oly 100-400 is the same Sigma 100-400 everyone else has, the 40-150 f/2.8 is the same size as a 70-300 f4-5.6. The OM-1 isn't appreciably smaller than FF, and the OM-5 feels like a playskool camera despite costing $1200 ameribucks

The same as the Olympus 100-400, only with the added weight of a 2x teleconverter. It is literally the exact same lens as the Sigma 100-400 (which is also the same lens as the Fuji 100-400).

Not that it matters, there are no isoinvariant sensors in m43 world, so have fun with ISO 6400 (3200 in FF terms) being the noise ceiling, while FF has usability up to 25600.

This doesn't mean what you think it does.

ISO invariance basically means noise performance is the same if you properly expose at, say, ISO 3200 or underexpose a stop at 1600 and then raise the exposure a stop in post, whereas non-invariant sensors have worse noise pound for pound if brightening in post over just pumping the ISO in-camera. If you use a teleconverter, it's making your effective aperture narrower, which is still going to require you to either raise the ISO or bump the exposure in post to get the same exposure (if nothing changes with shutter speed and the available light is the same) as you would have gotten without the teleconverter. Thus, a teleconverter is still resulting in more noise (pound for pound) even on an ISO invariant camera.

I don't have a horse in the Sony vs. Olympus or whatever argument here, it's just that the way you phrased it makes it sound like ISO invariance results in the same noise at all ISOs or something similarly retarded like that.

yeah and its the biggest camera olympus makes, and look at the smallest lens for sony full frame. its fucking huge, theres not a single pancake lens for sony full frame. its the most awkward front heavy system. why they made it so small is beyond me because it just makes it harder to hold when youve got one of your giant 14kg 3meter long f1. whatevers attached, which every single full frame sony lens is. hell even full frame canon DSLR lenses are smaller cus of the flange distance. the ISO doesnt matter because no one shoots at 6400 and everyone whos good at photography uses a flash anyway. the om1s handheld highres shot is dope, handheld hdr is dope, handheld 30 second exposures are dope. its a cool camera thats fun to shoot with for people who are good at taking pictures.

You don't get it, a 300mm lens is a 600mm lens if you just crop to that 16mp. If you're fine with a micro four thirds size sensor you would be fine with a micro four thirds crop. Just a few more megapixels (we know sony has 90mp FF sensors, for a fact, or else they wouldn't be able to supply fuji with the X-T5 sensor, but they might be holding them back because the market is obsessed with E-shutter) and crop sensors are honestly deprecated.

The only remaining concern is the weight obsession of backpackers and twinks. Micro four thirds being practically discontinued as a system already and the market trend towards larger cameras and lenses shows that's such a minority that it doesn't just not matter, it's most likely not even a valid concern.

remember you are zoomed in on the aberrations as well as the detail but unlike an FF user can not downsample the flaws away and there's a lack of ubersharp glass that's reasonable (it's larger and more expensive than what's on FF most of the time). most lenses end up looking a bit blurry. phones have that problem too, sure, but the computational photography on phones is 100 times more capable and innovative than jap crap dinosaurware developed by salarymen that still use windows XP and panasonic lets note laptops.

A 1" sensor is only as bad compared to micro four thirds as micro four thirds is compared to APS-C and those "shitty optics" are honestly better centered and pretty fucking sharp than most cheap MFT shit. The OM system OM-1 averages $1300 used on ebay. The A7R IV can be sniped for barely any more. The lenses are within a few hundred too. Paying maybe 50% more at the most is actually a great deal considering you are essentially buying 3 levels of increasing reach and descending image quality in one camera body. 62MP FF+26MP APS-C+16MP MFT.

The lack of warranty coverage for water damage, even if you have a camera rolling showing when, where, and how it happened (ie: in the rain), is telling. Even if it works during the shoot, there's no telling what corrosion/fungus issues have started inside of the camera and lens. Telling a photographer their camera is "weather sealed" is how to increase the likelihood of the shutter jamming at 50,000 clicks.

bird photography frequently uses as much ISO as it can. Minimum 1/2000th shutter speed in dark conditions necessitates taking everything you can get exposure-wise. Hence the M.Zuiko 300mm f/4 pro being worth it for BIF especially, that extra stop of light is huge for MFTs. (Luckily it's extremely affordable for 600mm equivalent, readily available used, weather sealed, extremely sharp etc.)

Af's been great. I know the Sony options are going to be better, potentially Canon, but it's a huge step up from my prior gear. Sometimes it gets confused on wildlife in heavy brush, but I have subject recognition on/off mapped to the d-pad. Easy enough to toggle and use a focus point to fix. Ergonomics are kind of a bs thing, but it is really intuitive and easy to use.

Agreed RE: lenses. On the flip side, I don't believe any of the Panasonic Lenses are bad. The 70-300 is really good for being the 'consumer' grade telephoto. And at least for the Sigma lenses they're all released in E-Mount, so easy enough to find reviews.

The lenses are cheap, well built and design reminiscent of those from Leica. OM-D cameras have better ergonomic and button layouts than any of the brands listed. Fuji comes close but lenses are too expensive, and the film simulation is gimmicky (imagine buying new model for exclusive film sims). I'm not a professional photographer, just someone who loves taking photos and appreciates cameras. Unless your job demands it, you do not need a full frame. It sucks that a lot of people getting into photography get trapped into thinking that full frame is everything. I hope more people will give M43 a chance.

This has been said since 2016 when I picked up my G85. It’s not that phone pictures are not getting better, but we’ve reached the normie “good enough” level. Like, mp3s with music, most people don’t care about an image looking much nicer than the current iPhone tech. I do the overwhelming majority of my work in low light, but I have a bunch of different cameras for different reasons. I generally run 3 of the major major sensor formats with multiple cameras in each format many within the same era of release...m43, apsc, and FF...at both base iso and equivalent iso, at the same apertures and equivalent focal lengths, and with in camera NR off, the smaller sensors produce darker images. period.

You don't notice it until you're trying to match pics from 2 cameras or unless you're intentionally testing it out looking for a difference. Its not something I want to be true, it makes more work for me, but its the way it is.

Im not knocking m43, I enjoy using it. But when I need light that I can't create I use FF or rent MF

Given identical exposure settings, and using the same lens, the smaller formats should not produce darker images but images with more DoF and more noise. Given equivalent exposure they should produce the same DoF and noise. If you are getting darker images at identical exposure settings then the smaller sensors are likely not as sensitive at the same ISO. But this is a manufacturer calibration issue, not a format issue.

True, but you're still not capturing as much light, hence more noise. If you can live with the noise level then so can the FF shooter, meaning he can bump ISO 2ev. So he doesn't need a 600mm f/2.8 to match, a 600mm f/5.6 is fine.

Using a crop sensor is exactly like using that lens on FF and then cropping. EXACTLY.

The only difference is crop lenses have 0 vignetting correction (that they "use the sharpest part of the lens" is often wrong as well, as a lens of that focal length but designed for heavy vignetting may have soft edges). that only really applies if you are a snoy and use lenses designed for FF.

The only reason why M43 works for motorsports/cars in motion is because you live at base ISO with ND filters trying to get your shutter speed as slow as your panning skills will allow. Motion blur hides your lack of DoF and the low shutter speeds hides the lack the higher ISO performance. That and you're always trying to get as much crop factor as you can get track side either by massive 45+ MP FF sensors, 30+ APS-C, or 25 in M43 with long lenses. Of course if you're doing it at night then that's a completely different beast and you better have that 400 f2.8 on a 20MP FF body.

shorter focal lengths have more depth of field. because you are cropped, you need a shorter focal length. if you are un-cropped, you need a longer one, which has less depth of field. there's focal length and aperture. that's obvious, right? some people still think the sensor size changes anything but the field of view.

cropping does NOT make your picture darker. cropping does NOT make your picture brighter. cropping does not change the exposure at all - what it actually does is magnify shot noise. the easiest explanation is thus: you zoom in on the photo, you zoom in on the noise. a crop sensor is just permanently zoomed in.

this is the only reason crop sensors have bad high ISO performance. the ISO is not magically higher. it is exactly like cropping your photo and seeing more noise. sensor sizes dont change optics. a 25mm lens has the same DOF on every sensor. it is not a 50mm f4, if it says 25mm f2. it is a 25mm f2 that vignettes like a bitch. ISO 100 on your MFT camera might be ISO 40, but it definitely isn't ISO 400. it just looks like it because you are cropped.

TLDR: equivalence is not for comparing cameras. it is for trying to 1:1 replicate photos taken with other cameras.

You can take the same lens you used to produce the image on the FF camera, slap it on a GH6 and it will have more detail than the same sized crop of the highest resolution FF camera you could possibly use. He's talking about dynamic range, SNR and depth of field. AKA equivalence. For a given SS it will likely be a bit darker but that's because of ISO mislabeling.
