I choose based on how much I want in focus, what the available light is, if I’m stabilized on a tripod or handheld, a variety of other factors.

Most lenses reach peak sharpness around f/5.6-f/8, with f/11 having the best balance of deep depth of field, sharpness, and not being too affected by diffraction. F/16 is doable especially if I want deep focus front to back, but it’s not as critically sharp. Not that it matters much at most reproduction sizes.

I just shot a bunch of architectural stuff at f/11, 3 shot 2EV variation HDR. Turned out great. Shutter speed not a concern on a tripod, even at ISO 64.

Does this happen to you? I couldn't agree with you more f8 is the best aperture of all time but the reality very often gave only 5.6 at the maximum.

It's actually corners of a stair. very recently Front of Gyeongbokgung reshaped. It's much better than before though.

What is it that appeals to people about f/8? I've never used it and had it produce something I really liked.

This is a nice pic, but I can't help but feel like a nice f/4 or 5.6 planted right on the intersection of the roads would have been better. There is just too much visual noise when everything is sharp. Like the weeds in the foreground or the cars and lights way in the back. I also find the building on the right that's nearly blown out to be distracting. It would have been nicer if all these things were softer imo.

The point of the aperture is to control the ammount of light getting to the sensor or film. A larger aperture makes your depth of field shorter and you can choose to use that as an effect in you photograph. In some cases younmay want to find out which apertures produce the sharpest photos in combination with your sensor or film.
