I'm a broke beginner. Someone gave this machine to me years ago and I've tried learning 'photography' once or twice but it felt faggy to roam around with a camera. I want to give this another shot, but I don't want to spend money on this for at least 2 years. Is this old DSLR a good tool to get started? What do you recommend? How to not look queer when taking photos?

I did bring it out with me a few times, it was fun. But I was alone to make it feel less weird. I can't imagine shooting with this when I have friends with me. Feels like a buzzkill. Like people just enjoying the conversation on a vacation and I flip out this old thing and start shooting the beer cans or poor negro children or sth

Avoid those stupid cliches like the plague. A camera is a tool to freeze time, use it accordingly. Maybe it's the very memories with your friends you want to preserve. Maybe it's evidence of something.

That's what I want to use it for. But all my friends are nerds who don't like to pose that much. So when we take pictures it's only a boomer around the table dinner picture. Still love them tho.

You can probably photograph the activities themselves, like say if you go bowling you could take a pic of the bowling alley with the ball rolling.

It's a great camera for a couple reasons.
I bought a D5100 new and used it for 10 years.
Got all of my best shots with it.

1: It's decent quality, doesn't look dated.

2: IT TAKES ALL OLD NIKON LENSES

That second reason is the real king shit of these 3xxx and 5xxx models. They can accept all NIKKOR glass, including pre-Ai lenses, which give sharp unique shots for dirt cheap. Shooting in full manual mode is damn fun.

I bought a whole new set of AF lenses and a FX Nikon and yet I have never had as much fun or as good results with them as I did with my D5100 and 1960's glass. Highly recommended.

This attached shot was taken with my D5100 though a dirty car windshield using a 1960s Nikkor 50mm f/2.

ayy I got the D3100. before covid I went to photography meetups and junk. I enjoy shooting with 50mm and 35mm primes. if you're friendly people generally say yes if you ask for a photo.

I'm glad you're both fired up, this was my passion for a long time.

The best cheap NIKKOR glass I got was:

- Pre-Ai NIKKOR-S 50mm f/1.4 (fantastic quality lens. The best cheap fast glass you can get for these cameras)
- Pre-Ai NIKKOR-S 50mm f/2 (previously mentioned)
- Ai 70's NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8 "pancake" (extremely sharp, shots look different than the 1.4, try to avoid the "SERIES E" if possible, it's the cheaper version)
- Pre-Ai 60's NIKKOR 200mm f/4 (attached picture was shot with this one)
- Pre-Ai NIKKOR-Q 135mm f/3.5 (decent portrait/zoom lens, can be got cheap as it's the less expensive version of the 2.8)
- Pre-Ai MICRO-NIKKOR 55mm f/3.5 (REALLY handy macro lens, sharp too, has built in "lens hood")

This was my total kit for a few years, plus a bunch of odds and ends like spacers, filters (I loved my star filter), flash, pinhole lens cap (lomography fun for dirt cheap!), remote, Canon adapter ring to let my Canon friends try my old glass, and a bunch more crap. Yes my shoulders got sore from carrying it all!

I mean pinhole *body* cap, you can buy them for cheap on Ebay. They're sealed, so no dust gets in and they still function as a standard body cap, but work great as a quick and easy lomography lens.

I did buy a lot of non-NIKKOR glass for the kit, but I never really enjoyed using them, they all had chromatic aberrations, flares, and poor contrast. If that's a look you're going for then just start buying any cheap old generic NIKON F mount lenses you can find for around $20 and see how it goes, sometimes you get a winner!

My best non-NIKKOR find was a $27 "UNIVERSAR" 500mm f/8 stovepipe prime. It ended up being a well-built Japanese lens with a 12-blade aperture and was remarkably sharp for what it was, and though it did have a lot of aberrations I just fixed them in post.

*ATTACHED IMAGE WAS SHOT WITH THE 500mm LENS*

Who the fuck cares. Your not going to get any better sitting in your room, best way to test it is to pick a stretch of downtown to walk. I've done street photography with a D3 and that's 2-3 times the size of your d3200
Tldr; theroy only gets you so far, go out and go "click" and you'll learn

I got a d3500 when it came out for my 15th bday, it its been my workhorse ever since. Around 20k shutter actuations and still going extremly strong. Takes wonderful photos. It just works. ive gotten into art school with it, made thousands freelance with it, and although it takes a backseat to my minolta xg-1 now since i mostly shoot film, its a great camera.
Only lenses I have are they kit 18-55, 70-300, and a 50mm 1.8 prime my photographer teacher in high school gave me.

I recently dug out my old D5100 to use it as a $1000 webcam for remote work. It reminded me how perfectly this cam fit into my hands.

I'm glad I didn't sell it. It's a part of me, even though I switched to Fuji.

great little camera but for the love of god, get any other lens!! Those kit lenses are so disappointing in every way. An 18mm lens, or a 50mm lens would be so much better and will teach you far more about photography. I can not stress this enough. The camera is GREAT but the lens is SHIT!!
