For me the composition tells the history of the waves becoming the mountain in the background. One can also make a visual connection with the highlights on the waves and the clouds. Also sparks catches the eye and the film format helps the scenery even more.

Photography like this blows my mind a little. The photographer has to wait for the light to be just right that the mountain is illuminated but the water is both dark and has sparkles, then nail a shot where the wave is just so thay it shows symmetry with the mountain without obscuring the landscape. Landscape and wildlife photography takes insane patience.

I mean, if you saw his contact sheets you would see 36 nearly identical shots, and a few sheets of that as well.

I'd hope so! With digital we're granted even more wiggle room and we should take advantage of it, but it doesn't change the fact that OP had a vision for the photo, waited for it, and hit the shutter at a moment when the sea and the mountain looked like this. It's cool.

No, you're misinterpreting how this photo came to be. It's unlikely that he even saw this photo in the viewfinder when he snapped this shot. He had an idea for a photo and this was the best, closest one out of a few hundred tries. This photo came to be in the curation/editing stage.

perspective and compression(?) give it a pleasing "flatness". there are some unique forms in the waves and wet sand. the people on horseback give the viewer a scale reference. could do without the dog walker.
