Carry, I guess... gun preferably. Make your camera look ugly and cheap. Avoid areas that are populated by you-know-who. If you look like a pussy I don't know how much of a deterrent you can come up with, so just be ready to defend yourself. Practice good punching and kicking, and how to hold a knife properly. If you do end up having to defend yourself, don't hold back. Try to kill the person.

mtf/aps-c user here, can confirm, I carry a j-frame because it's small and with all the other gear carrying a large gun is kind of cumbersome, I'd rather carry literally anything else instead

Back in the 90's in the Haight-Ashbury district doing some street photos of the Druggies/Hippy's. Couple of them started to get pissed and follow accusing me and my friend that we were Fed's. Had a death-grip on my F3HP ready to bash in some teeth.

The old cameras are great for that ability if needed.

I carry 2 Nikon FE's and a 1911 chambered in gods chosen caliber with 2 spare mags
I've never had to use it even in Portland although I've had a few close calls I was able to get away from the situations.
I'm a pretty big guy though so it's always crazy people acting erratically after asking me for bus fare or who are worried I stole their souls and not some muggers trying to steal from me.

NTA, but I complained too earlier. Building corners contain very little information. There is no mood, no message, no place, no emotion, no vibe. Usually it's just a texture/color/shading. Sometimes shadows or shapes form lines and then photog tries to compose something with the lines. It says absolutely nothing in a boring sort of way, kind of like a post that only contains repeated "DESU".
