When folks say "stop DOWN" they mean make the hole in the diaphram smaller, not make the number smaller.
F-numbers are fractions. The bigger the number, the smaller the hole.
The f/1.4 aperture and really anything more open than f/2.8 are meant to be used for low light or when you deliberately want to blur the background. At f/1.4 and this close distance, everything but that eye you focused on is "background".
Try f/2, f/4, f/5.6, f/8 and compare the results.
The bigger the number, the smaller the hole, the more will be in focus.
