I have been told to leave by building security once or twice, No big deal really.
Once I was taking photos of a gas station at night, was reloading film in my car right beside it and a couple brown dudes rolled up in a truck,
Started saying some underhanded shit about "I should be careful around here" "some people might fuck you up if they see you out here"
Trying to sound real threatening.
I was in my car with the engine running so I didn't really give a shit about what they were saying and just said "OK" and left.

When I was shooting street people would get pissed off at me occasionally. Nothing physical ever happened, but there were some close calls.

One time I had my spot meter out and this guy thought it was a camera, lol.

I was taking a picture inside an in-n-out with my film camera and some guy really wanted me to delete a picture I took. I think he was having lunch with a woman that wasn't his wife, lol.

Occasionally people would think I was filming them when I just had my camera on a strap around my neck.

This one guy started screaming at me from across the street, and I was so confused because I didn't take a picture of him, but he thought I did.

Funnily enough no one got mad at me when I was using my flash in one hand taking candid pictures of people.

Good times..

Literally a half hour ago, I was walking to my local bar with my camera strapped over my shoulder. A random mid size suv pulled up next to me and the driver hollared me over.
He asked "Are you a photographer?" And I say "It's my hobby, why?"
He responded "I just wanted to see if you wanted to hand out. What are you doing now?"
Told him I was going to the bar and walked away.
Figure he either wanted something gay, or to rob me.
I wasn't anxious about it, weird shit happens when people imagine excuses to talk with strangers.

Similar happened to me out late one night. Boomer pulls up in his corvette or one of those cars and said hey you a photographer? I gave him some retarded answer and he jumps out m, gestures at his car, and goes like “well, check it out!”. But then the light turned green and he hopped in and sped off. Honestly weekend late at night he was probably coked or sauced (or both)? Fun times.

I did have some fear of always carrying while out with my camera. Decided to not trespass onto an abandoned cement mixing plant. There were plenty of opened up fence spots and the front gate had locks cut. Saw a few people going in for video and photography, but I know I'd be extra fucked if cops or whoever do show up and I also have a gun on me as I technically trespass.

Yes, I did street during COVID taking pictures of people who wear masks as chin straps in public. Usually people would just get upset and threaten to call the cops because they for some retarded reason think its illegal in the US to take photos. The worst was some spic who was in a car letting his wife drive. When she pulled up to a red light, I was sitting on a bench with my wife and took a photo of her with her chin strap mask. They drove away and he made her pull over and swap seats so he could drive, then he drove up to us, started yelling at me because i took a picture of his wife, and when I emasculated him by just laughing at him and pointing out the much younger woman with me was my wife, he threaten to run me over in his car. He then drove away, went around the block and tried throwing a can of soda at us, emasculated himself again by missing us by 40 feet and hit a random car alongside the road and then drove away.

The guys in this truck turned around, came back, and got out of the truck to bitch and me about taking their picture. Ever since I moved to the small town Midwest people seem to notice the camera a lot more. Either good or bad. Either they’re excited thinking they’re gonna be famous or they’re concerned about their privacy or some shit. People in the big city are much more neutral to cameras, just ignored them as part of daily city life.

The guy in this dump truck actually followed me *in the dump truck* to yell at me about taking pictures of it. I think he was concerned it might be trying to do some sort of “investigative journalism” about how good (bad) of a job he was doing. This was the same day as the previous photo, too.

I was using a contax t3, so it kinda looks like a digital p&s. He came over and told me to delete the photo. I told him I couldn't because it was on film. He kept on insisting that I delete the photo and went on about how it is not allowed to take photos of strangers. I told him that public photography is fine, and that in-n-out could ask me to leave if necessary. I could tell he was getting extremely angry, but trying to hide it. I kinda just told him I probably wouldn't put it online or something, and he went back to eat with his lady. He was keeping an eye on me while I was eating.

I need to keep looking for the picture so I can point the guy out. I have the film, but not 100% if I scanned it/uploaded it to my dropbox. In the meantime have this street shot I took using a powerful flash in one hand and the camera in the other, lol. Fun times, but I wouldn't do this kind of stuff these days.

If only I was able to think that quickly. Maybe I could have asked him how much money he was willing to give me for the roll of film.

Back then it took me ages to finish one roll, so it would have been heartbreaking to lose however many shots were on the roll.

Got a new lens and walked around my neighborhood to test it, shooting creeks and bridges and spiders and stuff. A lady pulled up to me in her car and angrily asked what I was doing and if I lived here. I just said taking photos and yeah I do live here and walked away. I guess she thought I was taking photos of the rich houses to plan a robbery or some shit.

People in small towns really don't like street photography (from personal experience) but most of the time, if you're open and friendly they back down. I think a lot of people think I'm working for an insurance company or a law firm. But once I explain it's just something I do for fun, they relax.

I've found also that gear matters a lot. If you've got a chonker lens, it scares people. But if you get something compact, people don't feel as threatened. It's about being open and not looking 'too professional'
