>>4419537>I've noticed full open I'm struggling to get most of the figure in focus and I'm not sure if it's just cause my aperture is too wide or if I'm getting too close to the figThe closer you need to focus, the smaller the DoF you'll have. So getting up close at MFD with f/2.8 will give you fuck all. You're basically seeing the start of what macro guys deal with.
To make shit worse, the longer your FL, the less DoF you'll get. It's just that with a longer focal length, you don't need to get so physically close to get the subject to fill more of the frame.
Shooting ultrawide lenses will get you practically infinite DoF, but if your subject is small, it's going to be bascially miniscule with a FL like that.
So what I'm trying to say is, if you buy the 85mm you'll find that at f/1.2 (or 1.4 or 2 or w/e) you'll have even less in focus than your 70mm at f/2.8 (or f/2 or 1.4 or 1.2, if it could do that).
Which is why I circle back to having a flash and a good softbox would be ideal, as you can turn the aperture up to something like f/8 and still be at very low ISO.
If you want the 85mm for the background blur, then by all means go for it though.
