Anyone on /p/ make money off of photography?

I'm trying to figure out my future. I'm thinking of doing real estate photo and video work as main source of income and food photography as supplemental work.

Please share advice and success stories.

Going into 7th year of mostly wedding work. I shoot with my partner, she handles all the client stuff (emails, contracts, payments) and I do the backend stuff (website, editing, delivery, etc).
Weddings are great for $, one wedding client can be like 4-5 sessions, and even more referrals.
>engagement, pre-wedding boudoir, wedding, anniversary/family, maternity, newborn/family, other family/senior
Weddings give automatic referrals, majority of my clients have been other couples at weddings we were shooting. There is a lot of repetition with weddings,
but still plenty of opportunity for creativity.
Last 2 years we've been doing just photo, but we're both looking to wind down to a side hustle again. In prior years we both worked full time and mostly shot weekends in the summer, with other photo work here and there.

OP here. I've never done weddings but I did private events as a second shooter for a bit. I'd prefer real estate and food because it's more minimal on the client management side. I just need to start working, it's driving me insane NEETing.

No, nor would I want to make any money with it. I would rather sit at a desk and send emails all day that sully my camera by doing fucking real estate photography. Photography is a passion of mine, I am not willing to whore it out for money under the delusion of escaping the rat race. The feeling you get when you're out and engaged with the process, not thinking about anything except your composition IS the escape from modernity. The insistence of trying to turn the things you love into vehicles of profit is the reason why we live in the hellhole that we do.

Fair point. I need to figure out a viable career path though. I don't particularly love real estate photography for example, just a way of maximizing use of an asset and essentially subsidizes me playing video games and engaging in non-money making creative pursuits

That wasn't the way you described it though. You said it was "maximizing an asset" as in you wanted to make a return since you spent the money. I would just work a regular job, or if you already do and need more money then get a part time job or do doordash, turning your hobby into work usually requires you to sacrifice your enjoyment of it. I would rather do just about any other job than take photos because I'm unwilling to give up my hobby.

Also if you want to get into it, also consider that it's not free, you are putting wear and tear on your camera's mechanisms, which only last so long. Would you make enough to replace your camera in a year and still make a profit?

The same could be said about my car which cost more than my camera and the return would be less doing doordash than photo work.

i've done a year of real estate stills on the side as a contractor. the ultimate goal is an expository advertisement and the company handles the image processing so there isn't any room for creativity. my main photography interest is in people and street, so i find this quite boring. honestly i'd rather shoot weddings, but my full time job is on the weekends. but i took it because it's a very easy one-shoot-per week type of gig and it's kind of fun to drive out to neighborhoods and enter houses i'd never otherwise visit. i find that it's both close enough to my actual interest by virtue of being camera work and distant enough as soulless ad production that it leaves me with a greater urge to go out and do the photograhpy i want. as a full time job, or even taking any more time than i spend on it now, i think it'd wear me out very quickly and as anon said, i think it'd sour me on photography somewhat. only you can find out exactly where your balance lies. btw, drone footage is where the bulk of the money in real estate photography lies and i believe the future of it lies too, because soon every realtor's phone camera will obsolete tripod stills shooters

Yeah, I've heard similar. I'm not sure what is more important - drone or matterport. I'll have to do some research there but I'm leaning towards buying a drone first because it's cheaper and has a wider amount of applications. I'd guess that the matterport is only used on either high end or the most democratic options.

DJI just did line refresh so there is lots of used or even new Air 2S and Mini 3 Pros available for good prices, both are good enough for most estate gigs. Autel is also cheap as dirt now if you need variable f-stop.
