I see this mantra chanted over and over from so called professional photographers. Why is that the case? Is it impossible to get recognition as a jack of all trades? Is this just gatekeeping faggotry?

Grew up listening to him. You know for a fact that his mainstream audiences were not the metal, rap, or synth crowds and he wasn't played on most radio stations. I didn't even include pop to be nice. Collaborating/experimenting isn't a legit excuse, many did this including Carlos Santana and Frank Zappa. That isn't breaking into each mainstream crowd, it's having fun because you can. Corea was a jazz musician who could afford to have some fun. You need to look at what made him his money: his core work.

What kind of person can't figure out why Bob's Wedding/Product/Sports/Wildlife Photography isn't a viable venture? At best you could run an agency that employed specialists in these fields. Time (and skill) alone would kill the individual, never mind the marketing costs.

If you're good at say taking pictures of cars and make money off it, then you need to focus all your energy on car photography.

It's like any career. Me, as a welder, will not spend my extra career making time learning how to operate forklifts and CNC machines, I'll know how to use them, but my money making skill is fusing metals together.

If money isn't involved, then go be a jack of all trades.

This isn’t just an artistic/creative pursuit thing, jobs and everything else function similarly. Doctors focus on an area or two if they’re real fuckin nerds, lawyers pick sections of the law to focus on, engineers pick a branch to specialize in, even more foundational topics like say a physicist, has an area of focus. Perhaps people despite the marvel that is our brains can only do so much proficiently.

Most clients need someone who has specific skills to shoot a wedding, a portrait of the dog/kid, real estate, event &cet. They want the pro who does good work for the job.
Satisfy needs of your clients in one of the fields better than other wannabe professionals and you are the pro.
If you want to be be jack of all trades of photography, do that as a hobby.

It's mostly a marketing thing. These days when most of the advertising is done on (((social media))), market segmentation is king. It gets expensive trying to target every niche.

You don't have to actually specialize, you just should be marketing yourself as a specialist. It's quite common for pros to work in multiple genres, and have entirely different branding / marketing / websites for both.
Look at it from a clients perspective. If you were a real estate agent, you'd probably hire someone that appears to specialize in real estate photos, not generic everything photographer. Nothing screams hobby amateur more than a website or portfolio spanning all kinds of genres.
