My favorite 35mm roll was the Studio 35 200iso film. It was sharper than all the name brands. It hasn’t existed for ten years. Never tried it just because it was a store brand? Too bad. Even the Walgreens 400iso disposable camera was sharp. Studio 35 200-800iso film was all sharp, and sharper than name brand.

We could only afford amateur film and that shit was blunt back then. Also, 800 iso film was always recommended back then, exacerbating the situation; there was no internet to warn us about that. However, my uncle preferred Kodachrome 200 and most prints I’ve seen in his albums are crappy.

Fucked scan, they stuck it on auto mode and didnt check if anything actually lined up.
Also the fact the bar is the same sickly orange as the rest of the image means auto mode boosted the shadows probably due to underexposure.

a rescan or a home scan would make these pics look so much better.

I wonder if Fuji makes any colour film anymore at all. I’ve seen a wild theory on the boomer film forums that anything still marked “made in Japan” is just deep frozen stock they’re pulling and not recently made. Curiously no one can find made in Japan Fuji with expiry dates beyond early 2025. But the Kodak repackage does. Wild stuff. Then there was that report a couple weeks back that some Chinese chemical company is going to produce it for them now, so who really knows what Fuji films are anymore

Kentmere 100 and 400 are FP4+ and HP5+ with less silver in emulsion. Worse shadow detail.

Kentmeres are decent films and much better than Fomapan crap.

Still I pay a little extra for FP4+ or HP5+.

I know I said the scans are dogshit but I think you can actually fix them a LOT even without actually re-scanning. Just cropping out the side and doing an auto level adjustment and white balance worked wonders. I'm going to color correct it real quick. gimme a sec.

You really don't. If the leader isn't sticking out, it probably has been shot.
But, an unused roll could have had the leader wound back inside. It could be partially used. An unshot or partially used roll could have the leader still out. nevertheless, I would say the vast majority of normies don't switch film mid-roll and don't use cameras that rewind with the leader out, so for most people it's probably a safe bet to assume leader out = unused and leader in = used

I saved your picture, then opened it in Darktable. On the right hand side in the edit mode, there's a search box. So literally all the tools I said, you can just search them. First, I used crop. Then, levels. on Levels I clicked Auto and then I adjusted the middle grey point just a little. No real logic behind it, just adjusted it until it looked better. Next I used the white balance tool and did automatic mode. Then I went to the color correction tool and pulled the shadows out of the green a bit and finally I went to contrast brightness saturation and bumped the saturation a tiny bit.

Now, given that I was able to do this with the ultra shit scan you got, I have a feeling that a better scan plus some adjustments will yield a pretty decent photo in the end.

Has anyone actually tried those weird rolls? I’m tempted because some of them come in like 8, 12, 18 shot versions, which would be nice for my half frame stuff, but the prices are usually terrible.

I’ve mentioned here multiple times that gold/ultra max are literally just as good as portra with the benefit of being cheaper, but no one seems to care. The association with portra being some kind of ultimate colour stock is just too strong.

They aren't as good as Portra when it comes to grain but I prefer the rendering vastly more than Portra. Especially for the price. Like I get that pros need Portra for certain uses like big prints or events but I think YouTube/Instagram hipster influencers did brain damage to the younger generation of film photographers when it comes to Portra.

UltraMax colors are kino. Don't really like Gold colors but if you're a person who does, I agree it's great.

when I did mine I realized there was really not enough to work with and that making it more neutral would mean desaturation and there wasn't enough info left to bump up the saturation without making it look weird so I left it with a bit of a cast which can still look nice

it's basically up to you, what you want out of it
