Cheap, Chinese lenses

No.4325106 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
Hard to resist, aren't they? Their imperfections, like softness, feature-rich bokeh, blooming and weird flares can be a lot of fun. No auto-focus or electronics, just manual control. They're like vintage lenses but without the fungi. And as they're usually pretty cheap, they do have a habit of making their way into the hands of crop-camera slobs like myself. But finding ones that speaks to you can be tricky though, so I'm making this thread so we can share our experiences (and photos).

Some basics: I really like the 25, 35 and 50mm set that's often sold under the Meike brand. Neewer also had these for a bit. Nice textured bokeh, but inconsistent flares that can be a bit intrusive. They all produce really soft images when wide-open, in a pleasing way, with a little bit of blooming. Reasonably sharp at f4. The 50mm is a bit sharper, and also has a bit of focus breathing. I like it. Solid build across the board with smooth rings and decent ergonomics, considering their small size. De-clicked aperture ring. Pairs well with MFT. The 35mm is excellent for portraits, but the f1.4 variant is a bit too soft for my liking. They're easy enough to find, but their steady price increase is enough to warrant scavenging the used market.

7artisans 7.5mm f2.8 fish eye is a lot of fun, especially for videos. Minimum focus distance is about 3mm, which allows for some really crazy macro shots. I sometimes use mine with a BMMCC, allowing for shots in really tight spaces. That combo can be used similar to a probe lens, which is pretty neat. No filter thread unfortunately, but that's nothing a little bit of tape can't solve. I don't love the look, though. Soft in a textureless way and too contrast-y (without a filter), but it works well enough for close-ups in softer lighting conditions without modifications. The flares are harsh, but mostly circle-free and colorless. Build quality is good, but the rings could be a bit smoother.

Those are my initial recommendations. What are yours?
