geotracker for android is pretty good for recording and i think you can dial down the accuracy so that its only polling once a minute or something like that and its really easy on the battery.
i did motorcycle road trips without any gps data at all, and when i submitted images to a publisher it was a pain in the ass to try to figure out which weird province or town a picture of a pile of dirt was taken in.
another option is to use google's location history thing, but it is not always logging and i don't know what makes it decide to log a data point. there will be hours of travel missing from the data. i don't know why.
