Quick question before I impulse buy a L39 lens off of Yahoo Auctions:
Nikkor HC 5cm f2 or Topcor-S 5cm f2?
I am looking for something to replace the Canon 1.8 kit lens that came with my camera - are these even worthy upgrades or just lateral moves?

What is it going on?

If it's a Leica just find one of the Summitars that needs work, they're easy to work on. Even my dumb fat ass was able to CLA one.

Only get the Nikkor if it's the version with 0.45m close focusing, the others aren't worth as much as that one

the topcor-s is a traditional symmetrical 6 element in FOUR group double-gauss style like a zeiss biotar except with 10 aperture blades, the nikkor-h is a 6 element in THREE groups sonnar style designed by bertele of zeiss again with 10 aperture blades...
sonnars are essentially telephoto on the front half because of their asymmetry... makes them hard to design for wide angles... gets amazing contrast/rendering at the cost of some sharpness/focus shifting. if you get the topcor it would be more of a lateral move from the canon 1.8, not everyone likes the sonnar wild backgrounds but if you do then the contrast increase would be an upgrade if you do B/W.

essentially it comes down to the air-gaps between elements and groups causing reflections/flares and light loss... topcor realized this and changed their rear groups to go from 3 to 2 gaps.

i believe all of the 5cm f2 nikkors have the close focusing

ok i looked it up and all the L39/LTM versions have it, strange as neither the leica iii or nikon s can support rangefinding that close
