Maybe 1/4 of the people buying them need the grip and double CF slots all the time. When you do shoot a job, throw on the fat grip that adds a second battery and a second SD slot, or the much fatter grip that adds THREE batteries, 2 CF slots, and full sized HDMI and ethernet ports.
Makes sense right? Just use one camera for everything. But that's not what camera companies want. They want you to buy lots of cameras, not just one camera and 1-2 accessories that cost $500 tops. So what you actually do is you buy a pseudo-compact and cope with how uncomfortable it gets with a 70-200 during a wedding, or you buy a blob and cope with how embarrassing and uncomfortable it is to carry a z9 for vacation snaps by buying a foolthirds or fooljifilm
