Think of the number of amazing photographs taken in the past, how many were nailed even in situations where photographers were in similar numbers at some sporting events. The incredible shots stood out. Sharp, properly framed, properly exposed etc. Now there are so many ways in which the field has drastically simplified. That's not to say it doesn't take real skill to take amazing photographs, but the quality of equipment and processing now is so high that someone with enough technical know-how can get a useable image. Where-as in the past they wouldn't have had a chance. compared to a skilled photographer. Plus, the demand for content now has driven down the need for quality over quantity. It's not like it's one thing, and it's not all the technology that's the problem, it's also the consumer demand.
Look at the wedding photography industry. If you want a good experienced photographer you have to pay for them... And most people don't want to spend that sort of money so they get their second cousin who is just starting out and will give you a USB of raws they shot.
