Anyone have experience with photographing food for advertisements? I came across a few videos about different agencies staging photo/video shoots of food and thought it was interesting how they did it all.

sorta. my buddy and i have a client we shoot for every two weeks. One's a bourbon bar steak house, the other is a sports bar. We don't do anything fancy, and the pics come out OKAY. It's whatevs.

How much do you charge? I'm in the caribbean and charge $400 and hour for 10 images, but I'm being told it's too little for people accustomed to US freedom bucks.

Here's a huge food photography tip

Control the background and stop the fuck down so the food is actually visible. Pick a spot where you can hang some string lights far away if you want bokeh so bad.

You make more than I do, friend. I'm in Texas, and wasn't really involved with the business side of the deal, so only make $600 per month on this client for two visits a month. For us, there's no hard and fast time limit or number of pics/number of videos delivered. It's mostly shit that goes on their social media. Tbh, kinda hate doing photo for work. Can be soul crushing.

Thanks for the feedback. Most times I just take my foolji xt4 and my buddy's video LED lights. We just use their restaruant as the backdrop as you can tell. Table by the window, ETC. Would you recommend taking backdrops and whatnot? Genuinely looking for criticism and feedback.

Gets you something to put on your portfolio in case you want to keep going down that path, but evidently you're not feeling it anyway. $300 per shoot isn't anything to scoff at though.

Maybe needs a particular ratio or size to fit a menu. Restaurant owner could have also just said "make food biggur retard" and you get shots like this where the plate is cut off. The angle looks a bit low as well now that I look at it.

Having your subject noticeably out of focus is a big no in photography in general. So is cropping it out.

Bokeh should be controlled with distance to background, so the restaurant actually still works if you can make sure BG objects are distant. Otherwise go full product photography and shoot straight down onto well laid out tables. Use simple gobos in front of softboxes to get dappled light. it looks unusually good for food. You can make one yourself by punching holes in something opaque.

It's one variation of that plate. Usually I deliver 2-3 variants. Most of these pics are used for social media and newsletters.

Thanks. Money and supplies have been an issue for me, so everything I do right now is pretty lowbudget. That is hopefully changing very soon.

I once did a small shooting to show off cups. I filled them with different stuff, and let’s say barely anything was edible. Apple juice? Water with basedsauce. Cup sprayed with stick on water drops (think it was glycerine mixed with water). Coffee topped with cream? Water with even more onions sauce and shaving foam. There I truly learned the only thing that matters is what you see and how it appears.
Had my light on the right and reflector on the left (which made a huge difference)
