Charge the camera before you go shooting. Make sure the AF-assist light is on, if you're having problems. Also using the center AF point usually gives the best performance. For the shutter release, usually there's a setting to choose whether you want the shutter to fire even if it's out of focus, or if you want it to hold off if the image isn't in focus. Maybe check that setting.

TL;DR charge your camera battery and read the manual

What the fuck are you shooting that is draining a battery on any Nikon DSLR in one day? I plowed through an entire 64gb card this week and I'm still at full power on one battery and 40 percent on the other.

Seriously a battery grip can fix this, and Nikon DSLRs need them to be held properly.

This is entirely a Nikon problem, I never had it with the Canon I used to use for work. It's an intentional design decision on their part, it's just a stupid one. Hence why I was hoping maybe there was a software solution, sort of like how old MP3 players had Rockbox. "Camera manufacturer's UX team is made up of literal kindergartners" doesn't obligate me to just deal with it if there's another way.
