Take a 101 class, they start with the Myth of Photographic Truth and then show you how the structure of your eye, nerves, brain, light, cameras, film, sensors, projection and print technology, and fundamental philosophies on documentation and creativity. And if they don't, ask for your money back and go buy a book to help you get started.
If you think the artistic pursuit of photography is to completely remove the creativity and influence of the artist and leave only raw unaffected, unadorned, unintentional documentation, you just might be a german. ...or worse, a goddamn engineering student.
