Prolly good to have a thread about these kinds of cameras running.
Although not known for having incredible photo quality, these cameras are highly versatile and robust, and can be brought to almost every single environment with only cheap accessories.

Feel free to discuss about your experience of action cameras such as the GoPros, DJI Osmos, Insta360s, Sony Action Cam etc. It is also nice to recommend people looking to buy action cameras

I am absolutely sold on the Osmo 4. I've had GP5, 8, 10 and 11, but the Osomo 4 just fills all the features I have missed from the other cameras

I heard the Osmo 5 is being announced today though, so holding off my purchase until I get to know more about it.

You're missing the mobius camera which is a good bridge between covert spy type cameras and full size action cams
Good for attaching to model aircraft!

Yeah I think the mobius was designed with feedback from the early FPV (wrt model airplanes) community, at least that's where I learned about it, I used to do all sorts of fixed wing FPV flying

What’s new? I bought one for my cheap Aliexpress quadcopter to replace the stock camera. The quality was okay nothing super impressive but certainly was better than most compact stuff on the market back then.

I played around with the insta360 x3, and while I think it's really cool and I would use it as part of a bigger project it's basically useless as a main action cam.

It needs too much light, and shooting airsoft where you are constantly in and out of doors it's just not capable enough. Turns out I do like 360 photography tho.

GoPro are the standard but I keep having problems with them.

I don’t think it was ever intended to be a main action cam.
It’s great for getting 3rd person shots, faux drone shots, shots where you throw/drop the cam, and freediving/scuba where there’s alot of stuff going on.

As for GoPro, I’d personally suggest switching over to the DJI Osmo Action series, unless GoPro makes a huge comeback this year with the 13(doubtful). It’s much better in lowlight scenarios and the software is waaaay more stable, reliable and responsive than the GoPro jeetware. Especially infuriating was having my GoPro crash under water while scuba diving and missing out on crazy experiences. Never had any of that happen on the Action 4.

The Action 5 is about to be announced so I’d suggest you hold off from buying until its specs are announced. Could be a minor upgrade, but from my experience with other DJI products I do wish I got the next years release where some of the shortcomings are fixed(looking at Mini 3 Pro vs Mini 4 Pro)

I’m innersted enough to wait & see what that action 5 looks like. I sometimes shoot with a gopro session 5 on my hot shoe, so I can add a video mode to my nikonos v. And can grab a vid of whatever I’m shooting slides of. But thats bc its small, i dont think id want anything as big as a full sized gopro on top of my camera.

I would go for the Action 4 anytime unless you want 360 degree horizon leveling at 4k. That’s all I can think of in GoPro’s favour

So you are saying the Hero 13 is not only the same sensor, but also the same GP2 processor that struggles to process the video pulled out of said smaller sensor. That is actually embarrassing.

With the overheating and the stability issues I'm sure they had to rewrite their firmware but DJI already needs less light and I'm sure as hell not paying for what is basically a firmware update.

The only good thing I liked about Hero 13 is their anamorphic lens also which isn't available right now and will roll out in the markets in 2025.

Hero 11 is the last one I bought. I was pretty happy with it and used it alot, but seeing how lacking the new releases are in comparison, I see no reason to upgrade.
Pretty much sold on the Osmo 4 due to the WB sensor as I do a bunch of scuba and saw the results of my friend using it.
