I wanted to rip some movies to get clips for a video essay I am writing and because of my software/disc drive I had to buy the DVD versions of the movies and while watching back the files I noticed that not only was the transfer mysteriously better than any version of the movie available on the two streaming platforms I have it on, but the lower resolution files had a "flattening" effect on the image which made it look more natural. The reduction in resolution obsures fine detail, which is how I actually see the world, when I look at a field of grass, I don't see each individual blade of grass as a well defined object, but a green haze. Of course I could make out the fine details if I focused, but after comparing the two sources I ultimately decided that I preferred the look of the lower resolution one. Which got me thinking that maybe I should just start doing this in general for my own projects.
