Why do intelligent people all shoot this film?
I know most of the famous photos from history were taken on it but it’s not even colour.
What are high iq people seeing in this and why don’t they want colours?

World war 2 was photographed on this film, the most iconic photos from history were on this film, it’s the most famous film stock of all time from colour or black and white.
And yet here, on a photography board no less, most people haven’t even tried it. Explain yourself.

No. Different b&w films are designed to have different spectral sensitivities aside from just pan/ortho film.

Aerial films have increased red sensitivity to cut through haze for example, and basically all photographic films have different spectral sensitivities that you can look at on a datasheet.

I’m down the rabbit hole now it’s so complicated to understand what black and white film is actually capturing, it’s reducing the colourspace our eyes see but I still don’t really get it, it does not capture enough info so therefore it’s 100% impossible to convert black and white to colour correctly, but how does information possibly get lost? What colours disappeared?

You can translate b&w to color if you use red green blue filters and take 3 pics using the 3 filters. There's a name for it, but I forget.

Sensitivity translates directly into density.

2366 is a blue sensitive film, compared to tmax which is a full spectrum film.

Yeah but it still makes no sense, every colour appears as a shade of grey, yet somehow you can’t tell what colour any shade of grey was even if you know what film it was shot on and that table for it.
Is it making multiple colours the same grey? How does info disappear? Is there less shades of grey than colours in real life? So black and white just merges similar colours as 1 shade of grey?

Or is it just photographing how bright stuff is and the colour could be anything.
Would a red and blue ball both show as the same shade of grey if they were the same brightness and saturation?

It's a physical/chemical reaction. The light is translated into density of the physical grains at varying rates on the film. Some colors of light work faster, while others work slower. Combine spectral sensitivity and film speed/exposure together and it all just works out to make a coherent image.

Think about why the trichromatic process works and it makes sense. You can't tell the colors apart until you can use an additive/subtractive process to differentiate the density values of different colors.

bw film records light intensity. that's the ammount of photons that hit a part of the film and their energies. film reacts non linearly with the photons depending on the wavelength (energy). if you knew how many photons hit a spot of the film and their energy distribution you could know the color but with bw you only know how much energy hit that spot. then there's the whole thing with how humans se color, we see 3 primary colors because we have 3 different cone cells sensitive to different frequencies of light
