Has anybody figured it out yet?

My Nikon D800 is just not producing this feeling in the photos at all, even if it misses focus slightly from using an outer focus point.

Jokes aside this is a clear demonstration of how softer images can still look good if the softness is evenly distributed throughout the image. Resolution chucks absolutely BTFO yet again.

The answer is that lenses designed for black and white were very contrasty relative to modern ones. If your Nikon is a Z-mount get cheap passive adapter and buy a price some price-gouged L39 or early F-mount Nikkor lens off some hipster. Then use the camera's focus peaking to make sure you are focusing slightly more on the foreground than the background, which should be easy considering the lens would be manual focus anyway.

A lot of the depth here is because the focus is on the plants in the background. The two guys on the right are way out of focus and the guy smoking a cig is nearly in focus. Then the guy behind him is sharp and the hedges sharper. You can do this with any camera that can shoot at like f/2.8 or wider. Try intentionally focusing like 10 feet away and shooting subjects that are closer than that to get close to this.

Needs to be less sharp and needs way less of that fake grain. Maybe a defocus/soften pass and next time adjust focus to be slightly too close.
Too bad the hipster haircut and modern glasses completely ruins the vibe.
