As an unbiased party who studied painting and was therefore never told which photographers to like, saul leiter's hobby snapshits fucking suck and it's clear he's a failed painter. The Edward Hopper that couldn't hack it. Every photo is garbage.

His portraiture was mildly entertaining at times, less stodgy than most, but a great deal of it was "safe"

if he were not jewish there's a slim chance he would have achieved posthumous commendations. It's like annie leibovitz. Objectively, mediocre. The social side of art sullies it. Shits on it. Maybe in 200 years the rain will finish washing all that shit away.

There are worse cases of profit taking (vivian maier, did not even try to make art - the actual artist is the relative curating 1 million snapshits to try and get them to resemble a purposeful body of work so they can receive her overdue money - relative who can't be named without inciting a libel suit)
