What makes this legendary photo by Charles O'Rear so good? For all the zoomers out there, this photo was the default background for Windows XP. I wonder how much Microsoft paid O'Rear for this photo.

I missed that one. Apparently, Chuck said this photo is virtually unaltered. The reason why the colors are so vibrant is because he shot it on medium format Fuji Velvia 50. I believe he used a Mamiya RZ67.

Because it's a surreal picture. It's of a real place the Palouse around Rosalia, where I've been, and it's like no other place on Earth. It's beautiful and natural, but delicately manicured by man. It's interesting farmland, not flat. It's full of color. It's the opposite of a square structured computer and office environment. It's peaceful, calming.

That picture was taken in sonoma county, California. It is a vineyard where the vines got destroyed, so they had to remove all trellis and vines from the area. It only looked like that for a little while, and now it just looks like one of the hundreds of vineyards in the area.

Yes indeed, I do believe it adds to it all. Apparently this place only looked nice and green and dreamy for a very short time. The photo was taken in 1996.

A combination of things; perfect cloud coverage that casts shadows on the green grass, the clouds also helped provide perfect light conditions plus the white fluffy clouds contrast with the blue sky and green grass as well as the shadowy darker grass.

The vine leaves also have a drier looking green, nothing you can do ablut their natural colouring, and the dirt is exposed making it look unkempt even if it's way more taken care of than a grass field
