1) I shoot dslrs and a histogram is not available without then going into the playback and checking, so I only do it occasionally when I have something I really want to make sure I got.
2) setting a negative exposure comp protects the highlights from getting blown
3) I don't need maximum information because I'm getting it closer to the final edit in camera, the extra information I'm getting, I would then throw away in editing anyway. Getting maximum information is only helpful if you're not sure what your going to do with the edit and if that's the case then why are you taking the photo?
