It's called depth of field and it's determined by focal length, aperture, distance, and photographic area size. Just shoot close and wide at a wide aperture. Your probably just noticing the lower contrast rendering of older lenses and film.

I'm always amazed at how people on this board will understand what medium format is but not focal distance.

That being said, those extra steps can be soothing and part of the fun. And celluloid is just so cool. That's why when I go shooting, I take identical photos with a film SLR and my DSLR to make sure I get both flavors.

I thought that cinema film was shot on low contrast reversal and then copied/edited onto slide film before being projected.

What 35mm video camera do you have?

My bad, and you're absolutely right! Most movies are shot on negative film, but a lot were shot on slide film (color reversal film). You might be surprised to find out that the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre from 1974 was in fact shot on low speed Ektachrome color reversal film, 16mm though. I don't actually have a 35mm motion picture camera, just still cameras.

Oh yeah, it was also ultra low speed 25 ISO (ASA) slide film. Eastman Ektachrome Commercial 7252 to be exact.

i think the medium format look is shallow dof at wide fov. you can of course get shallow dof on 35mm either with long lenses or fast primes but that's at the widest at 50mm, which isn't a very large fov. a medium format 80mm lens is fast and has a large fov

these days you can get like 30mm lenses at f1.x though so

it's not dof. there are 35mm and ff digishit lenses with shallower dof than medium format. its the things like tonal transition and colors looking nicer because muh big sensor

If someone is doing those solely for posting on the instagram then yes, better of with foogi film emulation.
BUT film and other photographic physical mediums have archival capability that no other medium has. We still have 200 years old daugerrotypes and glass plates. I still have negatives and prints of me and my family from decades ago, still have pictures of my grand grand father made in photographic shop. Will FAGMAN* cloud exist in 200 years?

* Faceberg, Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Netflix.

Archival prints exist, but there’s no way you’re including C2PA authentication with them to prove they werent altered or very good CGI. A negative provides forensic proof of that light hitting that film. Alterations including re-exposure are all detectable. Film still has value here, as long as its large and fine grained enough to outresolve an 8k projector (although 8k could fake 35mm pretty well for how much people are willing to enlarge it, i bet extreme grain peeping would show the projected images structure and how it differs from a real scene, just less distinctly than 645+)
