Should I get a CLA? I am being gifted a Nikon FE but I'm on the fence about getting a cla for it. Do shutter speeds really drift drastically for old cameras?

Some cameras will be very off while others may not be too bad. If you plan to shoot a lot of slide film you will want to have precise control over exposure to get a good result. If you are just shoot c41 or b&w it really doesn't matter too much if you're a stop over exposed.

No, unnecessary. That’s still the Nik F mechanism at heart, it’s as reliable as it gets. It’s like a Bell & Howell movie camera, solid reliable Mech made to last 1000 years. The only classic Nik that improved on the FE was the FA w matrix metering. You basically have a slightly nicer F3.

And to my understanding, this is because the scanner compensates for the exposure and you more or less get the same image? Because the detail is still there despite it being over/under exposed?

that is not true. The FE uses a vertically travelling shutter and is electronically controlled. The FM uses a copal square shutter, whereas the F uses it's own thing.

You would know this by just looking at the shutter itself. the FM is vertically traveling, and is a evolution of the Nikkormats. Both used a Copal Square Shutter which can be found in other cameras, too.

The F is an old school cloth shutter, horizontal traveling.

Yes film is really good at preserving highlight detail and bad at preserving shadow detail, so if you just make sure you don't underexpose too severely you can almost always recover your highlights. Sometimes your scanner will not be bright enough, but the information is still there and can usually be brought back in the darkroom.

Scanners take almost all the skill out of producing a good negative because you can just move sliders around to get a relatively good looking image.

I didn’t specifically mean the F1, I had no idea it used a horizontal cloth shutter, weird. I meant the shutter used in the other F cameras, the FM, FA, F3 cameras of the same era as the FE, obviously I should have been mire specific & said that. The point was that’s a solid shutter, and not one OP has to worry about drifting off over time.

Yeah, the evolution of the F is the F2, which does share some similar parts. The F is ancient, the only camera it shares parts with I think is the S series rangefinder it's made out of.

I mean they're not bad. They're definitely fetishized. The advance has some issues with these little springs that go out of tension on the FE/FM/FM2/FE2. The FE2 and FM2 earlier models both have issues with their shutter blades bending at faster shutter speeds. There's a lot of parts that go into the shutter mechanism and these aren't without fault. You know what never seem to break are the old M42 mount Asahi Pentax things like the spotmatic and shit. I don't know what it is about them that makes them seem to work so well, because ive never needed to take one apart. If only m42 glass wasn't so shit I'd probably use one of them.

Lol no, FE's are a dime a dozen and once the electronics die it's toast. CLA's should be reserved for mechanical cameras because they're actually serviceable unless genuinely fucked.

I love my auto-exposure cameras but would never pay more than $300 for essentially a ticking time bomb, they're not worth losing sleep over.

desu ive got a 'not so nice' one and I love it. was going to get an fm2 but the fm has more metal and it doesnt have that ugly logo on the front that makes it look cheap. dunno, its just an elegant camera, especially with le aliexpress grip
