As far as I'm concerned, I have done both:

It can become a huge pain in the ass to hike with a big piece of glass around your neck all day as wearing your camera crossbody is not an option when you have a backpack on. If I needed to use a backpack for some trip, I would err towards carrying just a GR or other true compact in the pocket and no other camera gear, making the discussion moot.
