You're not a real photographer unless you shoot people.
Portraiture is the purest and most artistic form of photography bar none. Through portraiture you develop and exhibit the bare minimum of skill needed to engage artistically with other genres and employ some directorial talent to truly create the images you want, not just the ones you stumble into. If you never engage in portraiture you will never, ever develop anything resembling talent. The portrait is the fundamental skill, the pure photography. It is the deceptively simple dish that must be made perfectly, the one that amateurs fail at despite being decent at more complex meals, that you must master if you are ever to truly master anything else.
This fact is not up for debate. Even Ansel Adams did decent portraiture.

Also talking to strangers and ask them to stand for a photo is the hardest thing in photography. Any pussy can photos of mountains and shit. Real deal is to take photos for the front or doing documentary style where you ask for the permission of the stranger.
If you can't do this then I am sorry you'll never be a good photographer.

Half of my work at Speedweek this year was people interacting with cars.
OP you only missed one small detail, shoot people but not the backs of their heads like all the other /p/hotismos here. No one cares about the backs of people's heads unless it's POV porn hitting from behind.

Go do this in some forgotten village near the border or in mundane everyday setting in your town. Then you will be justified in bragging about this shit.

But trying to get your portraits really good does sound like a good stepping-stone to knowing how to optimize in visual art.
