I'd rather crop from a square capture. Especially if any post-rotation is required (skydiving photo, safari, anything you can't autistic tripod bubble level before shooting, etc).
3:2 is a copium ratio made for "muh efficiency" back in the film days when the extra 50% height to deliver square would cost more PHYSICAL MATERIAL per photo. Everything should be 1:1 ratio now, without exception.
Most importantly EVERY smartphone should shoot 1:1 photos and videos. Tiny sensor, you should make the most of it.
The fact most people can't seem to figure out whether they want to shoot vertical or horizontal means 1:1 would be ideal. Best of both, crop how you want later.
Optics produce circles.
Humans make squares.
One could argue hexagonal sensors might be based, and closer/more efficient to matching circles, but have fun trying to digitally deal with that shit. No. Fuck off.
Give us squares.
Make photography great again.
Embrace 1:1 aspect ratio for the capturing medium.
