Bret and Austin were special cases as they both very, very giving in their matches and even a loss to them would increase your value. In the case of Austin, the fans genuinely hated seeing Austin lose and so most of his TV matches usually ended in DQs or brawls to the back. Austin would wrestle dudes like D'lo Brown and let them get a good degree of hits in, helping raise their own shock, even letting them trash-talk him. I won't say Austin was a selfless guy, but he wasn't a cunt either. He protected his spot, but he was always willing to help people and always willing to try and help them get over. RVD, Kane, Jericho, Benoit, Mick Foley, The Hardys, Angle, Booker T, Big Show, HHH, and the Rock have all credited Austin for helping them raise their profile. In the case of the Rock, Austin famously protected him and ensured he would remain in the main event scene until he was able to take the mantle while Austin went away for surgery. I'll go a step further, I can't think of any squash matches Austin or Hart ever had with active, proper wrestlers - certainly never on the selfish levels of HHH vs. Taz.
