I know bashing the women’s division is common these days but I believe this is a criticism I don’t see too much. When I made the post about comparing Stardom to western women’s wrestling, a comment mentioned that one of the reasons Stardom is so good is that the good workers consistently face each other week after week and a lot of the time you don’t know who will win.
When it comes to AEW dynamite, I am struggling to remember the last time a women’s match wasn’t a squash or a veteran going against a younger, greener or unsigned talent where the winner in not in doubt. The only time we see two top womens talent wrestle each other these days is due to a feud building for weeks or a PPV/Championship. I understand story is important and you want to keep your stars strong, but what’s wrong with having two good workers being thrown together just to have a good match every once in a while. We see it all the time in the mens division and those matches tend to turn out great. CM Punk is currently fighting other faces with little build up so he can contend for the title. Why can’t a womens wrestler have that same goal?
I think having a good work rate match with the women every once in a while can generate some interest back into the division. I remember the first Shida vs Deeb match having little story to it besides Shida’s 50th win and her wanting to face a strong opponent but people were still hype because followers of AEW know that they are two of the best workers in the division. The feud elevated things to be sure, but they had a great match regardless.
Even if a match has little buildup you can still tell a story in the ring or have the winner continue a feud in a post-match segment. I know the Owen is coming soon and AEW womens tournament matches tend to be great but the issue has always been continuing that momentum into regular Dynamites/Rampages.
