It was the world that changed. Everything went sour in the 80s. The innocence of the 50s was truly and completely dead and it became en vogue to be a nihilistic anti-hero -- this was doubled-down on in the 90s, and now has moved into full parody trope mode.
We're to blame for Superman no longer being a draw because we don't want aspirational heroes anymore -- we want dark badasses that have a twisted past and are MORALLY GREY.
Good guys are "boring". Heroes that we look up to are dead -- now, we in our narcissism drag them down into the muck of reality and make them more like us: flawed, filled with angst, and depressed.
