Granted, what they called "beer" and what we call "beer" are vastly different things, but the point still stands. People were paid with alcohol. It is called liquid bread for a reason. Hell, looking at the animal kingdom, and how much of it likes to get drunk off of fermented fruit, we have reason to believe that our usage of alcohol predates us as a species.
