He's always been a tryhard but I don't think that was his problem. He is kinda genuine in the sense that he's like his dad; unnecessary gravitas and a bit of Triple H syndrome.
I think it's just that he's yet another babyface who finally wins the big one and loses all of the reason to really be invested in him. His whole deal was 'Finish the Story' so now he has and he's champion, there's no hook to give a shit about him.
I'm certain that the crowd will turn on him eventually and it seems like a good opportunity to embrace that. It's not like he was ever going to be the face of the company anyway, which isn't a knock on him by the way. He's played his part well it's just time for a new direction with his character I think.
