The year is 2013; the biggest stars in WWE are Daniel Bryan, The Shield, The Wyatts and CM Punk.
Despite this, none of these acts were scheduled to be featured in the main event of the following year's Wrestlemania.
Daniel Bryan was the biggest, most organic babyface the WWE had ever seen. He was teased into the main event a few times but never remained there. He was booked to be facing Sheamus at Mania while the main event would instead feature a returning Batista to face off with his former Evolution partner Randy Orton, for the unified world championships.
But after Royal Rumble 2014 everything would change.
CM Punk had long been disgruntled and was in poor health. He was scheduled to be facing Triple H at 'Mania. However the rumble match proved to be the final straw.
CM Punk would walk out of WWE that night and never return. Not until 2023 of course.
However this forced WWE to re-write Wrestlemania.
Instead of facing Sheamus, Bryan would go on to face Triple H opening match for a chance to take part in the main event world title match between Orton and Batista.
Bryan would defeat HHH, Orton and Batista, all on the same night to become world champion.
it was the greatest ending to a Wrestlemania ever. A more organic road to Wrestlemania had never occurred and is unlikely to ever happen again.
All thanks to CM Punk quitting
