>Shoko Nakajima is from Niigata Prefecture, and she grew up in a heavy snowfall area even within Niigata. As a result, she participated in cross-country skiing as part of school lessons starting from elementary school.>"Cross-country was incorporated into physical education classes, and from the time I was in first grade... it felt like as soon as I became aware of things, I had to do cross-country. The courses were set up on the school grounds or on public roads around the school. In middle school, there weren't many students, so the only club activities open to girls were track and field or table tennis. So in the summer, I did long-distance running, and in the winter, cross-country. That went on for nine years until I entered high school. For long-distance, the club's policy was 'Let's aim for ekiden relays!' so it was 3km to 5km runs."
