The Monday Night Wars are a great example of the shortcomings of free market capitalism. Competition between WWF and WCW forced both companies to make every episode of Raw and Nitro must-watch TV. It created a huge industry boom and drew megadimes to both products.
But the whole thing only lasted 5 years. It was a 5 year boom followed by 20 years of stagnation after WWF monopolised the industry in the West. And the exact same thing would have happened if WCW came out on top. The moment Vince bought out WCW was when he stopped caring about making good TV, which is exactly why the Invasion angle was such a failure.
All businesses want to be a monopoly. Competition is what leads to innovation and greatness, and yet businesses avoid it like the plague whenever possible. The end goal for an individual living under capitalism is, after all, to do the absolute bare minimum amount of work and receive ludicrous amounts of money for doing so. And that's what happened when Vince won the Monday Night Wars.
