I think a pretty common criticism is that Cody's segments felt disconnected from the rest of the show, like a show within a show. A 'Codyverse', if you will.
In a show where everyone's trying to be the US version of New Japan, or PWG with a production budget, Cody was out there trying to be the modern version of NWA or some old territories. It was clear that his creative vision clashed with that of everyone else, and there was a difference in what worked with the audience.
I think the thing that turned people against him was the feud with Anthony Ogogo, where Cody played up the patriotism angle, and cut a teary-eyed promo about how he had ended racism by marrying a black woman and having a mixed daughter, but that just didn't connect when he was against a black British guy.
He was obnoxious, to a point where people were convinced he was going for a Homelander style heel character that never ended up happening, He really wasn't being that character, he was being himself.
