Up until a few years back there was a "Velvet Mafia" in WWF/E. This might seem like I'm trying to score some "hurr durr wrestling is teh gay" points but it ties into the whole Vince paying people off thing as you'll see.
Vince gave these guys free reign to do whatever the hell they wanted with whoever they wanted. Patterson you already know about and Steve Lombardi was a member too. Lord Alfred Hayes joined in sometimes. Vince had no direct involvement but would cover for them if necessary. The leader, believe it or not, was Gorilla Monsoon. He was bi and a serial cheater. A lot of the talent got their jobs jobbing to him in the sack. Sunny was one. He also had an affair with Shawn Michaels around 95-96. And the reason the midgets got a big push in the 80s was... I think you can work it out for yourself.
I mention Gorilla was a serial cheater as an affair he'd had in the 50s produced a son called Victor Quinones. Yes, the Victor Quinones of "jacking off all over David Flair's face" fame. He wasn't on the WWF payroll until around 97 but had long been involved with scouting and got his start as a ref when he was in his late teens (sound familiar?). He was in the velvet mafia also. A number of jobbers from the 80s and 90s weren't actually wrestlers but were guys him Patterson and Lombardi had picked up at NYC gay clubs. It's well known that Virgil got his job through letting Patterson suck him off (Pat was a top). When word got out, Vince would pay the people who heard to shut up. This included the producers of that Donahue expose.
Vince has been paying off people not only who he personally assaulted but other people in WWF/E for decades.
