The island and post island stuff a great example of the later versions of Oliver. I thought the dude did great with what he was given. Obviously like you said only so much you can do on the CW shows but those guys had a pretty solid track record of casting. Here's a fun one: Alan Ritchson is becoming popular after Reacher got some buzz on Amazon. His big ass was tapped to play Aquaman originally.
