But if you're gonna keep trying to bank on the IP, then it's not unreasonable for people to expect something more familiar. Especially when the franchise, up to that point, were pretty straight-forward slashers exclusively.
To Halloween's credit, the first time they tried to deviate, it was part of the original plan. They just shot themselves in the foot by making the sequel about Michael Myers. You're gonna have a tougher time selling an anthology when the first two back-to-back are not just the same, but very direct sequels.
