A crime is an offense committed against the public, aka anything against the law. If the government can press charges against you for it, it's a crime. Trying to make the distinction for "civil offenses" is kinda fucking retarded, since the distinction matters more for "civil cases" in which you go to court over offenses that private individuals or entities can prosecute, which can include crimes, but also things like
