>The Five Tragedies of 2021 - Part 4: [Broken Engagement]
>Hello, this is Yoshiko Hasegawa! This is my sixth column! I'd like to continue sharing the tragedies I experienced in 2021, and this time, we're on the fourth one. There were five major events that happened to me in 2021, and since I haven’t shared them in detail before, I’d like to take this opportunity to talk about them! Compression fracture in my neck and spinal disc herniation, surgery for an illness, 3 million yen in debt. And the fourth is the story of a broken engagement. In the previous column, I talked about lending 3 million yen to my boyfriend. This is the continuation of that story. (I’d be happy if you could read the previous one first!)
>It might sound old-fashioned, but I had always decided that I would only introduce a boyfriend to my parents if I intended to marry him. As I got older and never introduced anyone to them, people often asked me things like, "Do you even have a boyfriend?" or "What about getting married?" Then, I met someone I truly felt I wanted to spend my future with. So, with the feeling that this would be the first and last time, I introduced him to my parents. They were a bit surprised to meet someone for the first time, but they looked happy and talked to him warmly. He also told them he was seriously thinking about marriage, and I remember feeling incredibly happy and relieved.
>Of course, I didn’t tell my parents about the debt—I didn’t want to worry them. To be honest, at the time, I didn’t even think it was that big of a problem. We had agreed that he would repay the money I lent him little by little—30,000 yen each month if he could afford it. I thought we could get through this together, but just as I was beginning to feel that way... He—though I won’t say what his job was since he’s just an ordinary person—was unable to work for an extended period due to the effects of COVID, leaving him with no income.
