>>10068801Cassie listens to the girl as she speaks. It's clear her concern is genuine. Must be a result of that intimate involvement she mentioned. Just why a seemingly level headed girl like this would subject herself to Nikki's unpredictable nature, or when Nikki herself started to date girls remains a mystery to Cassie.
"If you're wondering where she is most nights, she's here at the club more often than not. And when she's not, I have a couple guys tailing her at all times. For safety, in case..." Cassie's voice trails off. How much does this girl know? She obviously knows about drugs being sold in the club. But Cassie doubts she knows anything about her position in the mob. So to her, Nikki being under watch at all times might seem a little odd. But Nikki is the only person in the world with any real connection to Cassie. If anyone wanted to get to her, they'd use her little sister.
Cassie changes the subject. "Where did you think she would be?" She laughs, and considers dismissing the girl. But that look in her eyes. She recognises it all too well, it's the same look she had when she was dealing with her mother.
"Look. I'm sorry about your parents. And that you never got to experience having siblings. Until recently, I never really did either, because raising Nikki myself meant she was more like a daughter to me than a younger sister." She hesitates before continuing. "And the reason I had to raise her, was because our mother was just like her. She thought she could hear someone talking to her, telling her what to do. And she'd talk to that voice, day in and day out. She'd talk to it more than her own daughter. Until a few weeks after she gave birth to Nikki, when she had no idea how she'd support two daughters on her own, and that voice told her not to bother and just kill herself." Cassie grabs a wine bottle and pours out a glass. "And as usual, she listened to the voice."
